Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin will also drive for the Haas F1 team in 2022, the team has announced. It’s hardly surprising given that the two rookies have been brought to the team in preparation for the 2022 season.
Schumacher, the 2020 Formula 2 champion, and Mazepin made their Formula 1 debut this season with Haas, which changed tack after a number of disappointing seasons with Romain Grosjean and Kevin Magnussen. The two rookies were able to gain the necessary experience this season for 2022, when the new rules come into effect. It has now also been officially announced that Schumacher and Mazepin will remain with Haas in 2022.
The announcement is hardly surprising. The two rookies were brought to the team in preparation for the 2022 season and so the contract extension was just a formality. Nevertheless, there was still some doubt about Schumacher. The German was linked with a seat next to Valtteri Bottas at Alfa Romeo, which is now in better shape than Haas. But those rumors have now officially come to an end.
“We knew we wanted continuity behind the wheel in 2022 and I’m happy to confirm exactly that with Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin competing for Uralkali Haas F1 Team next year,” said team principal Gunther Steiner.
Schumacher and Mazepin are so far behind in the Haas this season. The American team already shifted its focus completely to 2022 at the beginning of this season, leaving this season’s car behind in terms of development.
“It’s been a tough season for sure with the package we’ve had, but at the same time they’ve both embraced the challenge and worked closely with the team to learn our processes and adapt to the rigours of a Formula 1 campaign and all that brings – both internally and externally.
“Now as we look ahead to the 2022 season, we’re confident we can move forward as a team and give Mick and Nikita a competitive race package to make the next step in their Formula 1 careers.”
