A few days after the closing Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, most teams stick around for the traditional Young Driver Test. The stables give young drivers with little to no F1 experience the chance to test a current car. Slowly but surely it is becoming clear which drivers will be competing for which team. Nick Yelloly was already confirmed for the test by Aston Martin and at Haas F1 they already know who gets behind the wheel: that is Robert Shwartzman.
Shwartzman has been part of Ferrari’s training program since the end of 2017 and has since won the FIA Formula 3 title in 2019. Last year the Russian tested for Ferrari in Abu Dhabi and this year he can show his skills in the Haas F1 car. “This will be my first test with the Haas F1 Team and I’m looking forward to getting to know a new team, a new environment, and learning as much as I can from them,” said Shwartzman of the opportunity. “Having the opportunity to drive for another Formula 1 team is just incredible and I can’t wait to work with everyone.”
Haas team principal Guenther Steiner added: “We are looking forward to testing with Robert at Yas Marina in December. He is highly regarded by Ferrari – where he has been part of their training program since late 2017. His qualities are evident when you look at how he has performed in recent years, especially in his debut year in Formula 2 where he competed with our own drivers Mick Schumacher and Nikita Mazepin. We look forward to having Robert drive an F1 car and we look forward to working together in Abu Dhabi.”
Since all Formula 1 seats for 2022 are already occupied, Shwartzman already knows that he cannot make his debut in the premier class next year. He is currently finishing his second season in Formula 2 and again makes a good impression. Last year, the 22-year-old Russian finished fourth in his debut season. This year, with six races ahead of him in Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi, he is in third place behind newly-fledged Alpine reserve and Prema teammate Oscar Piastri and Guanyu Zhou, who will be promoted to F1 next year with Alfa Romeo.
