At the start of the season, the Red Bull was the car to beat, but Mercedes seems to have found some more speed in the last few months and certainly the last few races. Particularly in Brazil and Qatar, the W12 went into the hands of Lewis Hamilton as the fire brigade.
The Briton now reveals where Mercedes got this speed from. “I think over the year we have come to understand the car better,” he told to the media. If we are to believe the Mercedes driver, he got his last upgrade on the car ten races ago.
“We’ve been able to squeeze more performance out of the package without making any upgrades, as we haven’t had an upgrade since Silverstone. It’s phenomenal to see the small improvements and steps we’ve made,” said Hamilton.
The gap between Red Bull and Mercedes
The seven-time world champion thinks the gap between Red Bull and Mercedes is not very big, but his team has just been doing a little better lately. If Max Verstappen’s team manages to turn the tide, it can still be quite exciting, according to Hamilton.
“The two cars are clearly close together, so I think we have to get ready for a good battle. I think we’ve just done better in the last two races and I hope we can continue this form into the next two races. ”
Hamilton is feeling great
The Mercedes driver says that he was not feeling well at the start of the season, but he is currently in top shape. “I feel good, physically I am in the best shape I have been all year. At the start of the season I obviously felt a little less,” he probably refers to the aftermath of his corona infection last November. “But right now I feel great and the car also feels better than ever.”
Hamilton is therefore looking forward to the last two races and is also looking forward to a fight with Red Bull. “I’m going into the next races with a positive feeling. I think those races should be pretty good for our car, so I’m looking forward to the battle.”
