Lewis Hamilton will receive the engine under the hood in Saudi Arabia with which the seven-time world champion also drove in Brazil. This power source has few kilometers on the counter and can therefore be opened further. Mercedes hopes this will increase the Brit’s title chances.
Formula 1 can relax for a week after an intense triple header, but then it is immediately time for the denouement of this thrilling season. Max Verstappen gets on the plane to Saudi Arabia with a lead of eight points, but on paper the Dutchman could have a tough time with the men of Mercedes there. The brand new street circuit in Jeddah has many straights and high-speed corners, something that has given the Silver Arrows an advantage over Red Bull Racing in recent races.
Saudi Arabia Grand Prix
The Saudi Arabian Grand Prix is on the calendar for the first time this year so we don’t have any past results to fall back on, but looking at the layout it certainly looks like a track where engine power will play a big role. Mercedes is therefore also putting the engine that Hamilton drove in Brazil under the hood in Jeddah. Because this engine has only had one race on the counter, it can be further increased. A big advantage for the reigning world champion.
“We’ve seen a lot of fluctuations in performance in recent races, but looking at the track in Saudi Arabia I think it should suit us,” said Shovlin. “We’ve got the more powerful engine ready for Lewis, so that’s going to give him a usable power source. Here [Qatar] we had the less powerful engine in the car because of the track layout. So in that respect we are in a good position at the moment.”
