Lewis Hamilton has understood that Max Verstappen will not just sideline for the Briton and will always defend his place tooth and nail. Hamilton explains how he is trying to deal with Verstappen’s aggressive driving style.
It’s no secret that Verstappen prefers an aggressive driving style over conservative racing. In Brazil, for example, it almost came to a collision between Verstappen and Hamilton, when the Dutchman let his Red Bull deviate far from the track to defend the lead in the race. Hamilton was aware of the situation and let his Mercedes go off the track, avoiding another collision.
Be very wary
In an extensive interview with various media, Hamilton is asked about the approach he chooses with an aggressive driver like Verstappen. “You have to be extremely careful. More wary than ever before. Instead of giving someone the benefit of the doubt, you have to know what is going to happen. You have to try to avoid a collision at all times. Even if that means going wide. At the bottom of the line you want to finish, don’t you?”
Hamilton satisfied with his own behavior
Hamilton believes he is doing well in terms of crash prevention, despite having gone off track with Verstappen twice this season. “If you’re stubborn and don’t want to give in right away, you crash off the track. That’s what I’ve tried to do. I tried to be sure of avoiding a crash. I think in most cases I well done. You can’t always do it perfectly, but then there are other drivers who are aggressive and respectful in different ways,” concludes the Mercedes driver.
