Lewis Hamilton did not want to hear about a possible favorite role for Mercedes at the press conference. He is convinced that the circuit in Mexico City is a Red Bull circuit. He also discusses the reliability of the Mercedes engine and the statement Toto Wolff made last week about a possible deliberate crash with Max Verstappen .
Although the last edition of the Mexican GP fell prey to the seven-time world champion, he brushed aside the suggestion that Mercedes was the favorite for the win. “Last time they were here a little faster than us. It’s a Red Bull track. but only because Max made a mistake and got a penalty. But they were much faster than us.’
The Dutchman ended up on P1 in qualifying in 2019, but was only allowed to start from P4 through a penalty after ignoring yellow flags. Although Hamilton does think it is a Red Bull circuit, he simply goes for a victory when asked. ‘Of course! As always,” is his reply.
‘Want to win the right way’
This week, Toto Wolff said he would not be surprised if Hamilton or Verstappen deliberately caused a crash to take the championship. At the press conference, however, the Briton makes it clear that he has never won a title in this way and does not want to. “I want to win the right way,” he said. “And if I lose, then with dignity and the knowledge that you gave everything.”
As a driver who has battled for the World Cup title on ten separate occasions, Hamilton is feeling comfortable as the season draws to a close. Whether that is also the case with his competitor, he is not so sure. Max hasn’t won a championship for a long time. I know what it’s like to fight for his first world championship in this sport, I know the pressure. I expect nothing else from him. He’s still a youngster.’
Not afraid of punishment
Contrary to rumors about the problematic reliability of the Mercedes engines, Hamilton is not afraid of having to use a new power source in the last five races of the season and thus face another grid penalty. “Our engine is strong. As far as I know we will make it to the end. I don’t think that is a problem for us,” said the defending champion.
