Lewis Hamilton reacted before the race on the Qatar circuit opposite F1TV when asked whether the penalty for Max Verstappen was justified.
“My only reaction to this is that consistency is the key. In Austria I was still penalized in 2020 with a grid penalty after I didn’t go off the gas in a yellow flag situation. I didn’t see a single yellow flag then and therefore had to I will receive a three-place grid penalty,” said Hamilton, who will not see Verstappen on the front row on Sunday.
Because Verstappen was a double yellow flag, the Red Bull driver was penalized with a five-place grid penalty. “I’m not thinking about that, I have to focus on my own race. The rest of the team and I will be driving our own race today and are only focused on that.”
Due to the grid penalty from Verstappen, AlphaTauri driver Pierre Gasly moves up to second place, because Mercedes driver Valtteri Bottas also received a grid penalty.
