Pierre Gasly was promoted from Toro Rosso to the Red Bull team at the beginning of 2019, but after spending six months playing alongside Max Verstappen, the Frenchman was returned to the sister team by Red Bull adviser Helmut Marko during the summer break. Despite the mandatory step back, the driver at the stable from Faenza, which has since been renamed AlphaTauri, has not lowered his head. On the contrary; Gasly scored his first ever Formula 1 victory at Monza last year and is once again performing very well this year.
While teammate Yuki Tsunoda finds it difficult to get good results together, Gasly is consistently in the top-10 and regularly competes with the usually faster cars of McLaren and Ferrari. Of the 112 points that AlphaTauri has already scored this year, 92 were fished in by Gasly. It gives the team from Faenza the sixth place in the constructors’ championship for the time being, although the team in Qatar has fallen well behind number five Alpine. Team boss Franz Tost is therefore happy with the driver from Rouen.
“Pierre is constantly improving his performance,” said Tost. “If you compare him now to the beginning of the season, you can see that he has made another big step this year in terms of his behavior in the car and understanding the technical side.”
“For example, he changes all kinds of positions of the engine position during his qualifying lap. It shows how mature he is, how well he understands the technology of the car. These cars and their powerplant are so complicated. Adjusting some of the positions during a qualifying round helps to improve your performance, he does that in a fantastic way.”
