Ferrari team principal Mattia Binotto is full of praise for Ferrari junior and Haas driver Mick Schumacher. Binotto sees that the German has improved in the first year in Formula 1, becoming more consistent and faster.

Schumacher became the Formula 2 champion in 2020 and then made the switch to Formula 1. The German was unable to excel at Haas, but was better than teammate Nikita Mazepin throughout the season, who had more trouble adapting to Formula 1. to fit. After his first season, he was recently told that he will be given even more responsibilities. For this year he has the reserve role at Ferrari for eleven races, the other races Antonio Giovinazzi will be the reserve driver. The fact that Schumacher is given that responsibility is partly due to the improvements he has shown, explains Ferrari team boss Mattia Binotto.

“He is a Ferrari driver, we must not forget that,” Binotto said in conversation with RACER. “He is part of the Ferrari Driver Academy. We have that training team to find the next Ferrari driver. If you do it right and you’re a part of that, there’s no doubt that you get opportunities.”

“He has already had a season in Formula 1, which is important,” continues Binotto. “Mick has done well throughout the season. He has improved himself. Not only in terms of constancy, but also speed. If you look at the last races, you can see that he got a lot closer to the cars in front of him while Haas hadn’t developed the car at all. The fact that he was closer shows that he has made a good step forward in terms of speed,” concludes the Ferrari team principal.
