Daniel Ricciardo does not always have it easy in his first year at McLaren. The cheerful Australian believes that he still needs to understand the McLaren better towards the end of the season.
Although Ricciardo experienced an absolute highlight this season during the Grand Prix of Italy, where he managed to take a sensational victory, outside that victory it is not always good and convincing for the former teammate of Max Verstappen. He currently occupies eighth place in the world championship, 48 points behind teammate Lando Norris, who manages to occupy fifth place.
Difficulty in certain types of turns
Ricciardo made the switch from Renault to McLaren at the start of the year and is still struggling to master the car properly. “In long and medium-speed corners, our car struggles. The McLaren style is the only style to get through those corners well and quickly. Lando does a lot better in those corners. I don’t really know how to maximize it in there yet. “, Ricciardo shows guilt to Motorsportweek.com.
Weakness of itself
“That might make a difference of half a tenth per corner, but that adds up to three or four tenths per lap,” notes Ricciardo. “It’s a weakness of the car, but especially a weakness of myself. I can’t get the car to work in lesser places.” Yet it is difficult to improve. “If it was that easy, I would have perfected it by now. Lando is doing a great job, he has proven to be of top level. I really need to take another step with the McLaren,” he concludes.
