Lewis Hamilton thinks it is “pretty incredible” that he has never driven for Ferrari in his entire Formula 1 career. It is unclear to him why it never happened: “It’s a dream for everyone.”
Hamilton made the switch from his beloved McLaren to Mercedes in 2013, which was seen as a bold move at the time but of course turned out to be a masterstroke, with the six world titles he has won in recent years. Ultimately, it is seen as the ultimate dream for Formula 1 drivers to drive for Ferrari, but for the most successful driver ever, that does not seem to be possible. Hamilton has a contract with Mercedes that runs until 2023. That year he will be 38 and it remains to be seen whether he will continue in Formula 1 longer and whether he still wants to make the step to Ferrari at that age. It’s just not clear to him why it never happened.
“For years, when I came to Monza and walked next to the fans, I could hear them say, ‘Come to Ferrari!’” Hamilton told for Sky Sports. “That was heartwarming, but it’s pretty unbelievable that I’ve never driven for Ferrari in all those years. It is a dream for everyone, a goal to achieve.”
“It has never really been possible and I will never know exactly why,” the British driver continues. “I wish them all the best and in the near future I will continue to prevent them from winning the championship! Of course I look at the color and that red is just… it’s the red. I have a few Ferraris at home, so I can drive a Ferrari, just not that one!” Hamilton jokes.
