dr. Helmut Marko sees that Mercedes has become a lot faster in recent weeks, but does not think that Lewis Hamilton can show the same speed in the final phase of the season as in Brazil, where he was no less than 30 km/h faster than the Red Bull of Max Verstappen.
The championship of the 2021 Formula 1 season will most likely only be decided in the very last race. In theory, Verstappen could already take the title in the next race, but the practice seems to focus on Abu Dhabi. With a difference of eight points, in favor of Verstappen, the two title rivals enter the last two races of the season. Although Verstappen has the best papers, Hamilton seems to have got the momentum and the speed. Mercedes has been extremely fast in the last few weeks and that is why Red Bull must do everything they can to win at least one more race.
Hamilton was already fitted with his fifth engine of the season in Brazil, but after the race in Qatar it turned out that he had not used it this weekend. According to Wolff, Mercedes wants to keep this power unit for the remaining two races. There they will “pull the pin out of the grenade”, the team boss noted. Marko doesn’t think Hamilton will be as fast in Saudi Arabia and Abu Dhabi as he was at Interlagos, where he won a whopping 30km/h on the straight. “Lewis’s engine will not have as much power as in Brazil,” the man from Graz is quoted as saying by Motorsport-Nextgen-Auto.
Marko also thinks that Mercedes has finally said goodbye to its questionable rear wing. According to the Austrian, it has not been driven in Qatar either. “I don’t think they used their ‘special’ rear wing this weekend, because the speed difference on the straight was smaller,” he says.
