Marko: “No one can do that as well as Hamilton”

The 2022 Formula 1 season is getting closer and closer. The rule changes could shake the field, although Helmut Marko expects Red Bull and Mercedes to still have a slight advantage over the rest of the grid. The goal is therefore clear. “The set goal is the world title,” says Marko at Auto, Motor und Sport.

A fight with Lewis Hamilton and Mercedes has to happen again, although according to the man from Graz this can of course change completely. “Of course you never know for sure with these major regulation changes,” he puts it into perspective. “But Mercedes and we have the potential, the people and continuity. That requires a duel at the highest level, especially because there are no other drivers like Hamilton and Verstappen.”

Hamilton has unparalleled quality

Marko is not surprised if several drivers will compete for victories in addition to Hamilton and Verstappen. “It is very likely that Lando Norris can keep up,” he predicts. The Red Bull adviser expects less from the Ferrari drivers, as Charles Leclerc has been beaten by Carlos Sainz in his first season at the Scuderia.

Hamilton also gets a new challenge with George Russell. “Russell will definitely be a bigger challenge for Hamilton. Not just on a political level, because he’s British too. He’s a great, fast driver in qualifying. However, in the races, the distance to Latifi wasn’t that great anymore, so Russell has to prove himself in that area first.”

The young Brit can prove this by looking closely at Hamilton’s best qualities. Marko sees something in which the Mercedes driver excels. “No one understands the Pirelli tires as well as Hamilton. Nobody has mastered tire management as well as the seven-time world champion.”
