Just before the Grand Prix in Qatar, the FIA made a statement about Max Verstappen’s behavior during the final phase of Q3 yesterday. According to the FIA, the Dutchman did not behave properly under the double yellow, which was created thanks to Pierre Gasly. Just like earlier this season, this gives him a five-place grid penalty.
Pierre Gasly suffered a blowout on start/finish at the end of Q3, when Max Verstappen was still full in his last attempt to knock Lewis Hamilton from first place. The TV images show that the yellow flags are present twice briefly and then are gone again. The moment they are gone, Verstappen comes by at full speed. Other drivers did go off their gas. The question was therefore whether the electronic yellow flags were still present and visible at that time (outside of TV images). According to the FIA, this was the case, with the result that the race management has decided to give Verstappen a penalty of five places on the grid. The Dutchman will start from P7 instead of P2.
