The Dutchman Max Verstappen has taken the lead again with his second place in Turkey. But the 17-time Grand Prix winner warns: “Mercedes is currently faster.”
Max Verstappen is again world championship leader: With his second place at the Turkish Grand Prix, while rival Lewis Hamilton finished fifth, he is six points ahead.
But Red Bull Racing driver Max Verstappen said after the checkered flag fell on the Istanbul Park circuit: “Mercedes is faster at the moment, at least this weekend. We, on the other hand, did not manage to put all the puzzle pieces in the right place. Mercedes also seems to have the faster car on a wet track.”
“We have to get to the bottom of why we weren’t so competitive here. Result: Even if we are back in front in the drivers’ championship, it won’t be easy on the remaining six weekends.”
«We have had a really strong year. Whether I’m first or second at the end of this season doesn’t change that much for me. Because I always do my best. I hope that’s enough to be world champion after the final. But if it isn’t enough, I won’t have any sleepless nights because of it.”
“When I think about the fact that we weren’t quite on the same level as Mercedes when it comes to speed in Turkey, then we can be really satisfied with places 2 and 3.”
Hand on heart: Wouldn’t it have been possible for Max to scrutinize Leader Valtteri Bottas a little more? Verstappen: “No, because I saw that he too organized his race wisely and that he was paying attention to his tires. I also had to keep an eye on Leclerc behind me. In the end, we just weren’t fast enough to put Bottas in trouble, so it was wiser not to endanger second place and get those points.”
