Jos Verstappen can imagine that his son Max will stay with Red Bull for the rest of his career as long as he is given a car capable of winning.
Will Max Verstappen stay with Red Bull for the rest of his Formula 1 career? At least that is what his father Jos can imagine. The Dutchman still has a contract with the Bulls until 2023, but has been associated with a move to Mercedes time and again in the past. Then Lewis Hamilton’s contract also expires.
This season, however, there had been some tension between the parties – including between Jos Verstappen and Mercedes motorsport director Toto Wolff. A change seems a bit less likely, especially since Verstappen’s father told the Dutch ‘Formule 1 Magazin‘ : “We know what we have in each other.”
“Red Bull knows how good Max is – and Mercedes doesn’t know that yet. Maybe that’s good for them too,” he jokes with regard to the season finale and the World Cup duel against Lewis Hamilton, which Verstappen is currently leading with twelve points.
But there will also be a lot going on at Red Bull in the coming years. After engine partner Honda left at the end of the season, the team founded its own engine department and started building its own systems. Red Bull is becoming more and more independent and wants long-term success.
“And Max is important for the project”, knows his father and describes the connection as “simply perfect”.
It is therefore quite possible that Verstappen will stay with the racing team beyond 2023. “And how nice it would be,” says his father, “if you start here and also stop and be successful? Why not?” Condition: “As long as he has a car capable of winning …”
