Mercedes changes color, but that is not a surprise

It was a week before the first Formula 1 Grand Prix of 2020, the Austrian GP, that Mercedes showed the W11 in a new, black livery. This showed loyalty to Lewis Hamilton as a champion of diversity and inclusivity.

Mercedes even stuck to the black base for a second year in a row, but that is and has always been the last year in which we would see a dark ‘Silberpfeile’. As early as November 2020, team boss Toto Wolff confirmed this.

“Yes, we will also drive in black in 2021. It looks beautiful,” said Wolff at the time in conversation with Motorcycle Professional. “But if many new rules are introduced in 2022, we want to honor our heritage again with the Silberpfeilen. But the topic of racism remains very close to our heart.”

Hamilton agrees with silver Mercedes

Lewis Hamilton already indicated last season that he would be more than happy with that. That Mercedes stuck to the black car for a second year in a row was more than he had dared hope for, he told FPAL, among others, around the Russian Grand Prix in 2021.

“If we go back to silver again, that would be a nice change. It won’t make us lose sight of the changes we are making internally, as we continue to push for more diversity, together with all our partners .”

The big question now is of course whether Hamilton himself will be present when Mercedes pulls the sheet of the new silver car in the coming months.
