Andrew Shovlin is convinced that Mercedes’ W12 car can win the 2021 championships. The technical director of the German team expects Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas to continue battling for pole positions and victories for the rest of the season.
In Turkey, Andrew Shovlin saw confirmation that the W12 car is strong enough to cash in on both the drivers’ and constructors’ championships in 2021. “That was the positive news of this weekend,” he says in front of the microphone. “We are in shape during the dry weather, but also in the rain.”
“It looks like our car can win the championships.” Shovlin admits that earlier in the season Mercedes had doubts about how much time the team should spend developing the W12 further. In 2022, a brand new Mercedes car should have been developed due to the major regulation changes in the premier class.
“We were concerned that we would not be able to get our car on pole for this year (towards the end of the season, ed.) or have a front row lock out, for example. It is very reassuring to see that our package that We can still qualify for the Red Bulls and be faster on Sunday.”
Over the GP weekend in Turkey, both Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas qualified by a wide margin ahead of both Red Bull drivers. Bottas won the race convincingly, Hamilton was able to finish fourth after a nice catch up race in the rain.
