Mercedes F1 Media
Renowned Formula 1 journalist Andrew Benson has said the Mercedes team has struck a secret deal with the FIA. Lewis Hamilton is awaiting the FIA’s investigation before making a decision on his future in Formula 1.
Lewis Hamilton lost the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix on the last lap to Max Verstappen. Because Formula 1 race director Michael Masi decided to bring in the safety car, the Dutchman had one chance to overtake his British rival and win the championship. This also happened, which led to great dissatisfaction with Mercedes and Lewis Hamilton. Mercedes team boss Toto Wolff previously called his driver “disillusioned” after the race. According to insiders, the man from Stevenage has even lost all his faith in the FIA and the sport. The Mercedes team did not want to comment on the FIA investigation and it seems that both Hamilton and Mercedes are awaiting the decision of the motorsport association.
After the race in Abu Dhabi, the FIA said that Masi’s decisions had been misrepresented. According to the association, there would also be misplaced anger among fans, teams and drivers. The investigation must show whether mistakes have actually been made by the race management. A decision on the matter should come before the start of the new season, according to the FIA.
Deal with the FIA
According to an insider within the paddock, there would have been a backroom deal between the FIA and Mercedes. The team from Brackley would have demanded the departure of Michael Masi. For this, Mercedes, in turn, would not appeal against the decision of the stewards. Mercedes denies any involvement in a so-called ‘deal with the FIA’. In an interview, Toto Wolff said he “holds the FIA accountable” for the decisions in Abu Dhabi. The Austrian also said he had “confidence and hope” in a good outcome around the matter.
