Mercedes is looking for a solution: ‘Our car seemed to become less competitive’

Andrew Shovlin is going to have a busy night in his Mercedes, because according to the chief engineer there is still some room to be gained when it comes to speed in the long runs. Also in qualifying, Shovlin saw that the German team was becoming less and less competitive compared to Red Bull Racing. Max Verstappen eventually managed to take pole position ahead of Lewis Hamilton without any problems.

“It was a difficult qualifying for both drivers,” Shovlin said in a Mercedes press release after qualifying. “Our car felt its best in the first session and seemed to become less competitive as we progressed. Of course it would have been easier for the race if we had taken pole, but we are happy to start on the medium tyre.’

‘We have a busy night ahead of us’

At Mercedes they have the feeling that they still have to work hard. “Hopefully we can add some long run pace tonight. We’ve got a busy night ahead of us going through the different strategic options for the race, but we’ve shown lately that we can race well, regain positions and pass on the track.”

“We had a much bigger challenge in Brazil and we showed what we are capable of,” continues Shovlin, indicating that he is confident of a good outcome for Hamilton in the world championship. “We will do everything we can to get into a position during the race where we can take home the win and the championship,” concludes Shovlin.
