Nikita Mazepin has contracted a coronavirus infection and will miss the final Grand Prix of 2021. This is due to a message from Formula 1 confirmed. Mazepin will no longer be replaced for the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, which means that only nineteen drivers will participate in the upcoming race.
“The FIA, Formula 1 and the Haas F1 team can confirm that Nikita Mazepin has tested positive for COVID-19 in one of the on-track PCR tests,” the Haas driver’s press release opened. Mazepin is currently in quarantine and all employees he has had contact with have been informed of his coronavirus infection.
No replacement driver will be chosen for the Russian rookie, who will therefore end his year early. The reason for this is that a substitute must participate in at least one of the free practice sessions or qualifying prior to the race. Because Mazepin’s retirement only became clear just before the race, Haas is no longer able to use another driver.
Mazepin’s debut season
Of course, Mazepin is wished all the best throughout the paddock. However, his absence will not change much in terms of sporting achievements. He has been at the rear with teammate Mick Schumacher all year. The team is still at zero points and will probably not get rid of that in Abu Dhabi either. So he misses little in that area.
Mazepin is doing well
Mazepin has now also responded to the news of his outage. ‘Hi everyone! I am disappointed that I tested positive for the coronavirus. I feel okay, but I can’t race this weekend. I wish all my colleagues a fantastic end to the season and express my gratitude and love for all the support,” said the driver.
