Sergio Perez does not feel that he is driving for Max Verstappen. The Mexican driver says he drives for the team and is more than willing to help his teammate to victory.
Pérez made his debut with Red Bull Racing this season, after driving for years at Racing Point. Even before Pérez had ridden even one meter in the Red Bull, it was clear that the Mexican would take on the role of second fiddle within the team. After all, it has been known for a long time that Verstappen is the first driver of the Austrian racing stable.
Valtteri Bottas is the second man of the Mercedes team and regularly receives team orders. The Finnish driver has had to give away a win to his teammate on more than one occasion in recent years, in order to secure the championship. He is also regularly thrown to the lions, for the benefit of his teammate. At Red Bull Racing, on the other hand, that is not so bad. Pérez is in some cases used in battle, for example by staying outside for an extra long time, but he also gets plenty of opportunities himself.
Perez the team player
“To be honest, I don’t feel like I’m racing for someone else,” Perez replies when asked if he feels like he’s driving for his teammate. “I race for my team and Max is part of my team. Everyone in the team wants Max to win because it works to our advantage. So as a team we give everything we can, everyone supports me. If I do well, it means “That the team is doing well, the same goes for Max. The fight for the constructors’ title is very exciting, in the end we want to win that too. That makes the difference and shows how successful our season was.”
