Sergio Pérez has had a disappointing Saturday afternoon. The Mexican driver had to settle for eleventh place during qualifying for the Grand Prix of Qatar. He states that the heavy traffic is one of the causes.
Pérez has mixed results in Qatar this weekend. The Red Bull driver did not go further than eighth during the first and second free practice sessions on Friday. This while teammate Max Verstappen in turn set a first and third time. During the third free practice session on Saturday, Pérez was slightly closer to P5, giving his team good hopes of a successful qualifying. However, the 31-year-old driver did not get further than a disappointing eleventh place.
“Yes, today was very disappointing,” Pérez tells the Ziggo Sport camera. “I think we were in good shape all weekend, especially after the third free practice. But we didn’t manage to finish in qualifying. We changed our approach to the tires and I think that we didn’t get it right.”
The Mexican emphasizes that the conditions on the track were also far from ideal and is therefore critical of his team’s strategy. “There was a lot of traffic at the time, but I think that’s something we’ll have to discuss. It’s too early to say anything about that. I was stuck in traffic, so couldn’t have a good outlap,” he explains. . In any case, Pérez has a clear goal for Sunday. “Hopefully I can recover quickly and join the fight early. It’s going to be hard to do, but we’re going to do our best.”
