Pierre Gasly is not pleased with the course of the Grand Prix weekend in Russia. The Frenchman judged that AlphaTauri “didn’t deserve to score points this weekend” and hopes for improvement: “We can’t afford mistakes like this if we want to finish fifth in the championship.”
After a disastrous weekend at Monza, AlphaTauri hoped for better times in Russia, but they would never come. Gasly was disappointed with the failed qualifying on Saturday, where he did not go further than the twelfth time but was convinced that Q3 was feasible. Even after the race, in which he scored no points, the Frenchman was unhappy about the team’s tactical choices.
“We drove the whole first stint in front of Bottas, but in the second stint we ended up behind Bottas,” Gasly reflects on the race. “Then the rain came and they brought it in while we kept driving. He finished fifth, we were out of the points. So yes…”, says the Frenchman, subtly hinting his dissatisfaction.
Different things could be heard on the radios when the rain fell. One team was forecasting more rain, while the other teams said the rain would not be too bad. They also did not see the heavy rain coming at AlphaTauri. “Apparently we weren’t expecting more rain and then more rain came, so that was a shame. We are going to see how we can improve our weather forecast. When I look at the last lap I see that we were four seconds faster than anyone on the intermediates, so the pace was there again, but yes, we made too many mistakes and we didn’t deserve points this weekend to score”, according to Gasly’s harsh judgment.
The zero score of AlphaTauri in Russia follows after the zero score in Italy, which only increases the pressure in the championship. “It’s questionable how we go about things because I know we have a smart group of people on this team,” says Gasly. “Unfortunately it went wrong this weekend and we lost a lot of points. We can’t afford to make mistakes like this again if we want to go for fifth in the championship,” he concluded.
