Pierre Gasly was not pleased with AlphaTauri’s choice not to change tires in Q2 after qualifying for the Russian Grand Prix. Gasly indicates that he repeatedly asked his team to change tires, but he continued to drive: “We did poorly.”
Gasly was in good shape in Q1 and looked guaranteed to secure a spot in Q3, but surprisingly he stranded in twelfth place in Q2. On Gasly’s onboard it was clear that he was very upset about this, as he regularly hit the halo and his handlebars during a lap in frustration.
“We were very fast in Q1 and we were also fast at the start of Q2,” explains Gasly. “We kept driving on tires that were worn out. I asked the team for a pit stop several times, but we kept driving on used tires. We had the pace to be there in Q3. We did poorly and I don’t really understand why we didn’t make a pit stop.”
Will there be a meeting with the team after the failed qualification? “Certainly, just in case it happens again. But it happened and now it’s not going to give us a better starting position. We have to focus on the race now. It will be dry. To be honest I don’t know what to say now. We have to make up for some positions because we are clearly not where we should be,” said Gasly.
