Former Formula 1 driver and Alpine advisor Alain Prost believes Fernando Alonso is ‘the best driver on the field’. The Frenchman is also positively surprised by the two-time world champion, who has become ‘a different person’.
Alonso not only achieved his best qualifying result of the season in Qatar, but also his best result since his comeback. The Spaniard fought for what he was worth from third place, resulting in his first podium finish in Formula 1 since 2014. “Seven years, but finally we did it,” said the relieved Alonso. “I’ve waited so long for this and I’m so happy.”
Alpine advisor Alain Prost is impressed by Alonso’s performance both on and off the track. “For me he is the best driver on the field,” Prost told Auto, Motor und Sport. “It’s incredible the overview he has, his feeling for the tires, the things he says about the car and how he feeds the engineers with information.”

The four-time world champion was skeptical about the arrival of Alonso earlier this year. ‘Le Professeur’ said he had ‘his doubts’, especially because the Spaniard was often not on par with his previous employers. That caused Prost some concerns, but they have now been completely taken away. “Fernando has always told me that he has become a different person. I have to say, he was right. He is fully at the service of the team and that is good for the team,” said Prost.
