Kimi Raikkönen hopes Antonio Giovinazzi will one day return to Formula 1, now that it is known that he will lose his Alfa Romeo seat to Guanyu Zhou. Yet the Finn also knows that the chance is small: “There are few cars.”
After three years, Giovinazzi has to say goodbye to Alfa Romeo, which goes for Valtteri Bottas and Guanyu Zhou for the 2022 season. The Italian drove himself little in the spotlight in recent years, but drove much better in the second half of the season this year. However, that was not enough to keep his seat. Kimi Räikkönen, his teammate who will retire after this year, gives Giovinazzi another chance in Formula 1.
“It is obviously a shame for him,” said Räikkönen about the imminent departure of Giovinazzi. “He’s a nice guy, we’ve known each other for a while. Since the Ferrari days actually. But that’s how it goes sometimes,” said the Finn. “Hopefully he has found a good alternative and hopefully one day he will have another chance in Formula 1.”
Shortly after announcing his retirement, Giovinazzi announced that he will continue his career in Formula E in 2022. He will be riding for the Dragon Penske team there. Räikkönen grants the Italian another chance to return to Formula 1 after that year. “Absolutely. But there are very few cars and a lot of people are ready to go to Formula 1, so let’s hope so,” concludes Räikkönen.
