Christian Horner, team principal of Red Bull, saw yesterday that Max Verstappen could limit the damage in the battle for the championship. In fact, he ended up with Lewis Hamilton, who dropped from three to five in the final phase thanks to a wrong decision. Yet Horner also saw the difference in speed between the two cars.
The British driver tells Motorsport that Mercedes has shown a lot of improvement lately. “They have recently taken a significant step in top speed. Previously we could keep up with them by driving with a little less wing, but now we are not even close. No, you saw very well last weekend. Lewis had on quite an advantage in the straights while still riding with a big wing.”
Red Bull wants to focus on its own performance
However, Horner just wants to keep the focus on his own team, even though Mercedes is taking big steps. It is clear that Mercedes has become faster, but Red Bull can only respond if they get better themselves. “We just have to maximize our own package, but it’s quite surprising to see them [bij Mercedes] have taken such a step with the power unit.”
Next races opportunities for Red Bull
While the circuit in Turkey turned out to be especially favorable for Mercedes, the upcoming races may be in Red Bull’s favor in terms of layout. Horner also knows this, even though Austin has been dominated by Hamilton in recent years. “We know Austin has been a Hamilton stronghold in recent years and he’s strong there. But then we’ll go to Mexico and Brazil and those jobs at height have been good for us in the past. Well, we’re going.” every Sunday faithfully go to church and see what happens. But of course we do our simulations, do our homework and try to get the most out of it. We have to take it race by race from now on. At least we have scored maximum on three Mercedes circuits, so that’s positive.”
