Red Bull has handed out a small tease to Valtteri Bottas on social media with a wink. Cause of the bite? The very easy way in which Max Verstappen passed the Fin.
Did Mercedes really have Valtteri Bottas put back on the grid in the Russian Grand Prix with a grid penalty to make Max Verstappen’s catch-up race more difficult? If that was the case, then they did not count on the uninspiring way in which the Finn defended against the Red Bull driver.
If you didn’t know better, you’d say Bottas had left the door wide open, as if he’d just received a team order. It will no doubt have inspired Red Bull to her tweet below. The video of the overtake was shared with the caption ‘Valtteri. it’s Max.”
That caption is of course a direct reference to the radio message from Mercedes strategist James Vowles in the Russian Grand Prix of 2018 (“Valtteri, it’s James). A team order followed, which immediately made it clear who is the number one driver at Mercedes and who’s second fiddle.
