Daniel Ricciardo admits after his disappointing fourteenth time in qualifying in Qatar that he could not find ‘the last few tenths’. The Australian thinks there is still a lot to improve on: “In some corners, I was half a tenth short.”
Ricciardo had hoped to reach Q3, like teammate Lando Norris, but he failed to do so. However, the 1:22.597 he recorded in Q2 was not good enough. He was only faster than George Russell in that session and was obviously not happy with his result.
“Obviously it wasn’t a great session, in terms of my position,” Ricciardo reflects on qualifying. “I would have liked to have been a little more competitive, but I just couldn’t find those last few tenths. It felt like if I tried I would win something but lose time on another part of the track.”
“So I still have some analysis to do and some work to do to find the time,” added Ricciardo. “I think I could win a little bit everywhere. I didn’t make any big mistakes, I was just half a tenth short in some corners,” said the Australian.
Because he starts fourteenth, Ricciardo has a free tire choice for the start of the race. “We will try something before the race”, he looks ahead. “We have a strategic choice, but of course we are far from it.”
