Daniel Ricciardo has hardly slept in recent nights, although that is not due to all the partying after his surprising victory in the Italian Grand Prix. The Australian McLaren driver wants to ‘hold the feeling of that victory as long as possible’: “I just play some replays in my head.”
Ricciardo caused quite the surprise in Italy by taking the lead from second on the grid and taking the win after 53 laps. Until then, the season had been moderate for the ‘Honey Badger’, who made the switch to McLaren. He barely slept after his win, but that’s not because of all the partying, assures Ricciardo.
“It’s just a kind of excitement,” Ricciardo told to BBC. “It still haunts my mind. I have received an overwhelming amount of love and messages from friends back home. It was pretty cool. So it’s hard to shut yourself off for a while.”
“This is something you want to hold on to as long as possible,” says Ricciardo of the feeling he got from his first win since Monaco in 2018. “I’m just playing some replays in my head. They are very vivid moments and memories of the race. With ten laps to go I told myself to stay cool. On the last lap I went for the fastest lap. I didn’t even know what the fastest lap time was, but I felt there was still some grip so I just gave it a try. I wanted to make a statement. Things like this give me a boost. So many things happened that weekend that gave me a boost,” said the Australian.
