Rosberg on Verstappen: ‘Have seen something very rare during qualifying’

After Max Verstappen’s pole position, he is again favorite for the title. At least, that’s what single world champion Nico Rosberg thinks. He also thinks Verstappen is a better driver than his former teammate, Lewis Hamilton. He infers this from Verstappen’s qualifying round at Yas Marina Circuit. There he saw a performance of world proportions from the Dutchman.

“Hamilton is good, but Verstappen is better,” the German told BILD. “We saw something very rare in Abu Dhabi during qualifying. Verstappen’s lap was insane, he is at the absolute limit. Verstappen has taken the favorite role again,” Rosberg concluded after Saturday.

Hamilton not without a chance

Although it is Verstappen who, according to him, has the greatest chance of winning the 2021 world title, it can still stand out on the side of the Mercedes driver. Rosberg: ‘Hamilton still has a chance. If Verstappen’s tires wear out quickly, that could be an advantage for Hamilton. The mediums last longer than the softs. Many teams often prefer to start on the mediums.’

“If all goes well for Hamilton, he could overtake Verstappen before the first tire change,” Rosberg thinks. It is likely that Red Bull Racing will dive into the pit lane before this can happen. If the Austrian team knows how to play it out strategically in Abu Dhabi, then the world title this season will most likely be for Verstappen.
