Rosberg surprised Red Bull didn’t consider Gasly: ”He’s doing phenomenally”

Nico Rosberg had expected that Pierre Gasly would get another chance at Red Bull Racing in 2022. However, the Austrian team opted to extend Sergio Pérez’s contract, leaving no room for the Frenchman.

Gasly was given the opportunity with the top team in 2019, to show what he can do next to Max Verstappen. The switch was only short-lived, as Gasly was replaced by Alexander Albon midway through the season. The Frenchman was simply too slow compared to his teammate. Since then, there has been tension between Gasly and Red Bull and there seems to be no return, despite a strong season from the AlphaTauri driver.

“He is great”

Gasly took it up a notch last season. The 25-year-old Frenchman finished ninth in the championship with 110 points. Rosberg therefore thought he would get another chance at Red Bull in 2022, the former world champion tells Sky Sports F1: “Pierre is really, really great, that’s why I’m surprised they don’t bring him back to the mother team, Red. Bull Racing.” The pressure from the top team was what Gasly succumbed to in the first period: “But you will never know if he is able to perform under the pressure of Red Bull Racing. That is a big question mark.”

Apart from a possible switch, the Frenchman is doing well with Red Bull’s sister team. Gasly was regularly in battle with Ferrari, McLaren and Alpine. In addition, thanks to the Frenchman, AlphaTauri secured sixth place in the constructors’ championship. “At AlphaTauri he really does a phenomenal job,” concludes Rosberg.
