Nico Rosberg finds it strange that Red Bull Racing has extended Sergio Perez’s contract and has not decided to add Pierre Gasly to the team. The Frenchman had a great season with AlphaTauri in 2021 and went over 100 points for the first time in his Formula 1 career. The former Mercedes driver would like to see Gasly back at Red Bull.
‘Pierre is really very good. In fact, he’s so good that you wonder why Red Bull won’t just bring him back to the main team,” the single-time world champion told Sky Sports. The 25-year-old AlphaTauri driver previously drove for Red Bull in 2019. Disappointing results caused confidence in Gasly to decline and Red Bull decided to return him to Toro Rosso, now AlphaTauri.
Rosberg: ‘You never know if he can perform under pressure’
Gasly was replaced by Alexander Albon for the Belgian Grand Prix in 2019. Unlike the Frenchman, the British Thai had longer to prove himself. Albon was eventually replaced by Pérez, but the Mexican has even been given a contract extension amid mixed results. The AlphaTauri driver himself hopes that there will be a seat for him at Red Bull in 2023. Still, Rosberg thinks he knows why Red Bull has not yet given Gasly a second chance.
“You never know if he can perform under the pressure that comes with driving for Red Bull. That’s the big question that keeps haunting me and that’s why they haven’t taken it back yet. At AlphaTauri, on the other hand, he is doing great’, concludes Rosberg. Gasly will have to do his best next season to prove that he is worthy of the Red Bull seat.
