Sergio Pérez took seventh fastest in qualifying this afternoon at the Istanbul Park Circuit. After Lewis Hamilton’s penalty, this means he can start from sixth place tomorrow. The goal to act as backing for teammate Max Verstappen has again failed, but there are also opportunities tomorrow.
For the cameras of Ziggo Sport, the Mexican tells how his qualifying went: “We were a lot closer to this during this weekend. We lost a set of the softest tire (in Q1), so we only had a single set of new tires left in Q3. On that new set we had a lot of understeer and because of that I couldn’t improve my time.”
Points for the team
Where Valtteri Bottas had to thwart Verstappen’s catch-up race in Russia, that role is now reserved for Pérez, to do the same at Hamilton. In addition, it is important for the team that points are scored for the constructors’ championship. The Mexican will therefore have to find the speed to drive forward.
Looking ahead to tomorrow
Speaking about tomorrow’s race, Pérez says: “My Q3 was really not good on those new tyres. I’m looking forward to recovering from P6 and I hope to get as many points as possible. It will be a very long race and I think that overtaking is possible. There will be a lot to drive for tomorrow.”
