Start numbers Formula 1 drivers 2022 | FPAL

Each driver in Formula 1 has his own starting number, which he chooses when he makes his official F1 debut. This song will remain associated with him for the rest of his career. If a driver has not been active in F1 for two years, his starting number will be released again and another driver can use that number on his car.

Nicholas Latifi, for example, took advantage of this in 2019 when he made his debut in Formula 1 with starting number 6. This number was released because Nico Rosberg hung his helmet at the end of the 2016 season.

A similar situation arose last season. Yuki Tsunoda chose the starting number 22. Until 2019, that number was associated with Jenson Button, who last used it in 2017 during the Monaco GP.
