Stewart expects eighth world title for Hamilton, but hopes for Verstappen

Jackie Stewart thinks Lewis Hamilton will take the world title away. Bee Daily Mail he says that he prefers Max Verstappen, but that the Briton has the better material. That should give him the advantage of securing his eighth world title in Abu Dhabi, the three-time world champion believes.

“The car, the engine – I think Hamilton has the advantage,” he kicked off with the British medium. The free practice sessions have already shown that the Mercedes will probably be faster in qualifying and the race. Although Red Bull’s long runs are better, they have to make a compromise to have a chance of pole position in qualifying.

Stewart hopes for Verstappen

Just because he thinks Hamilton will win the title doesn’t necessarily mean he hopes so. In fact, if he should be cheering for anyone, it’s the 24-year-old underdog. “I’d rather see it be Verstappen, because I think the sport needs a new world champion. So in that broader sense I would like to see that’, he argues.

“Verstappen tends to ask too much of the material and that can sometimes work against him,” he concludes. Perhaps Verstappen doesn’t even have a choice in Abu Dhabi. If the material is really that much worse than Mercedes, his only chance at the world title is to get more out of the Red Bull than people envision.
