Friday in Austin was mainly dominated by the speed of Mercedes. During the first free practice sessions, Mercedes was much faster than Red Bull and Max Verstappen, and there may seem to be a reason for that.
Sky Sports has shown in an analysis that the rear wing of the Mercedes car seems to move with the car, which ensures more speed, especially in the faster corners. In addition, the rear suspension of the car seems to drop to provide more top speed. Then, when a bend approaches, the rear suspension returns to its normal position.
Mercedes has been using this trick all year
According to Sky Sports, the images show how Mercedes essentially creates its own DRS. However, there are not only images from the last few races, but also from earlier this season. So the speed that Mercedes has found does not only seem to be due to the engine and the updates. Yet this trick has been used by Mercedes all the time, and was only discovered this weekend.
Wolff calls it bullshit, Horner and social media see it happening
According to Christian Horner, this is indeed what happened and is the reason Mercedes has more speed. Wolff, on the other hand, says it’s nonsense and that there are other reasons that Mercedes is suddenly so fast. However, clear images are circulating on social media, and also on Sky Sports, where it can be seen that the rear suspension is indeed lowering to provide more top speed.
