Tsunoda puts Gasly on edge: “I can beat him next year”

AlphaTauri driver Yuki Tsunoda will enter his second year in Formula 1 next season and then wants to take down teammate Pierre Gasly. The Japanese finished fourteenth in the standings last year, five spots below his French teammate.

Tsunoda was still a rookie in 2021 and little was expected from the 21-year-old Japanese in that sense. A more consistent line is expected from him next season and he sets the bar high for himself. Gasly had a strong season and it is expected that he will continue that line in 2022.

“Must beat my teammate”

Speaking to Speedweek.com, Tsunoda said: “The coming season is going to be very important for me.” It is therefore questionable whether AlphaTauri can build a competitive car: “I don’t know how good the car will be, of course, but as a driver you have to deliver a good performance and also beat your teammate.”

“Can Beat Him”

The 21-year-old driver has been able to learn in the lee in the past year. That will be different next year, in which he feels that he is ready for the fight with his team-mate: “But I now know what I have to improve and if I can do that, I can beat him.” Tsunoda will be able to show whether he can really put the fire to his teammate during the first race of the year in Bahrain on March 20.
