Tsunoda targets teammate Gasly in ‘important year’

Yuki Tsunoda knows 2022 will be “an important year” if he wants to enforce a longer future in Formula 1, and is therefore aiming to beat his AlphaTauri teammate Pierre Gasly.

Last season it didn’t happen often enough. Gasly then scored 110 points while the counter for Tsunoda got stuck at 32. In addition, Gasly managed to finish in the points in fifteen of the 22 races, which Tsunoda only managed seven times. In the qualifying battle, Tsunoda also lost out to Gasly, who won it 21-1.

Less than a week before he received a contract extension, Tsunoda himself estimated the chance of that no better than ’50-50′. Add in the fact that his patron Honda officially no longer plays a role in Formula 1 (although Red Bull and AlphaTauri drive unnamed Hondas and still receive technical support) and Tsunoda certainly has to prove himself.

“This will be an important season for me”, the Japanese said in conversation with SpeedWeek of aware. “Of course you don’t know in advance how good the car is, but as a driver you have to perform well by beating your teammate,” Tsunoda refers to Gasly. “However, I now know what needs to be improved,” says Tsunoda with one season of experience in his pocket. “So if I can do those things better, I can beat him.”
