The somewhat surprising pole position for Max Verstappen on Saturday evening is mainly due to the team. The Dutchman is pleased with the work delivered from Friday and explains what it was all about.
Things can turn quickly in Formula 1. The signs in the title fight with Mercedes were far from ideal after the race in Turkey, and Red Bull was not in great shape at the start of this weekend either. “After the Istanbul race, we were not happy with our performance. Also on Friday I was not very happy. This Saturday I was still not completely satisfied, but it was definitely going in the right direction. So that helped, because after the I thought the gap was big in the first free practice,” Verstappen explains about the start of his weekend.
Verstappen praises team
“I felt good in FP3, but again in qualifying I was not completely happy. I was looking for a better balance, while I normally feel quite comfortable and find the speed fairly quickly,” he adds. “Slowly but surely we always managed to improve and on Saturday we took the lead. That’s great work by the whole team”, he is satisfied with the hard work of his mechanics.
Tires are the key
It is clear to Verstappen what finding speed is all about. “Obviously this is a completely different track than in Turkey, but in the end it’s about the tires because those are the things that bring the car into contact with the asphalt. The tires behave differently all year round. can make a big difference. That also applies on this track,” he analyzes. “To do it all in Q3, that’s what you want of course. That doesn’t always work, but it worked this weekend!”
