Verstappen full of surprise: ‘Sometimes a miracle happens’

Max Verstappen believes that a miracle has happened in Abu Dhabi, he tells Formula 1. The Red Bull Racing driver has become world champion of Formula 1 due to an insane last lap. He overtook Lewis Hamilton after a late safety car period.

On the podium, the Dutchman talks about his day, which he started no differently than other Grands Prix: Sure I was nervous today, but on the other hand it was just another race. I kept pushing and believing throughout the game, even though it seemed difficult at times, but yes. Sometimes a miracle happens.’

The brand new world champion looks back on his way to Formula 1 and the world title: ‘It is amazing. My goal from childhood was to become a Formula 1 driver, to take podiums and to hear your national anthem one day. Then when you’re told you’ve become world champion, it’s insane.’

Verstappen proud and grateful, compliments to Hamilton

‘I now think back to all those years, with my friends, my father Jos and my family… They were all here today. They are the reason I am where I am now. It’s great and it just sounds fantastic to be world champion,” the 24-year-old Formula 1 champion continues.

Finally, Verstappen has only compliments to say about rival Hamilton and his team Mercedes: ‘Lewis is a great driver and opponent. He’s made it so hard for us this year. Sometimes it was difficult between us, but that’s all part of the sport. Everyone wants to win. Now we can do it again next year from scratch’, concludes Verstappen.
