Max Verstappen is speechless after he managed to win the world title in Formula 1. The Red Bull Racing driver outwitted title rival Lewis Hamilton on the very last lap to win the championship. After the race, the brand new champion looks back on the race and the year.
‘It’s unbelievable’, the Dutchman opens his story in front of the Formula 1 cameras. He looks back on a successful weekend in Abu Dhabi: ‘We had to fight the whole race and then we just take it on the last lap… It’s crazy, really crazy.’
Verstappen grateful to Red Bull
Verstappen continues and says that he is very grateful for winning the championship: ‘I don’t know what to say. The team, and also Honda deserve it so much. I love them so much. It is a pleasure to work with them and this year was simply amazing.”
For a moment Hamilton seemed to take off with the title, but due to a safety car period in the final phase, Verstappen was able to strike. “Finally there is some luck for me,” said the 24-year-old, who is grateful for Sergio Pérez’s teamwork after the first pit stops.
‘I also want to thank Checo (his nickname, ed.). He really gave his best and the teamwork was fantastic. He is a great teammate. I also want to thank my team. They know I love them. I want to stay with Red Bull for the rest of my life, I want to do this again for the next ten, fifteen years. Hopefully they’ll be okay with it.’
Horner and Marko get the honor of Verstappen
Christian Horner and Helmut Marko can also count on a special thank you from Verstappen: ‘They gave me the confidence in 2016 to place me in the car. The goal was to win the championship and now we have it, Verstappen concludes.
