On Sunday in Qatar, Max Verstappen did not have the pace to make things difficult for Lewis Hamilton. His life was not made any easier by the five-place penalty, but even without that penalty it would have been a difficult story.
The Dutchman realizes that his team simply lacked speed on the Losail International Circuit. “If we knew where to get the pace from, then of course we would have changed things, but this was somehow not our track.”
According to Verstappen, he was not able to get everything out of the rubber. “With these tires too… sometimes you get them to work perfectly and you have a lot of grip. But if you’re not on top of them, it can make a difference.”
All in all, he says he has done well in recent weeks. “The last races, even the races I won, I’ve had the feeling that Mercedes was very strong. So yeah, we’ve won quite a few points in the last races when I thought we were going to lose more.”
Verstappen: “Anything can happen”
This weekend Mercedes was clearly the better party, judges Verstappen, who is happy that he can compete for the world title this season. “We have to keep pushing. So far I feel like we have done a great job as a team compared to the previous years, when Mercedes was so dominant and fast.”
“It is therefore impressive for us that we are already participating in this title fight at all,” said the Red Bull driver. “Of course we are not going to give up, but this weekend we clearly lacked speed.”
However, according to the Limburger, everything is and remains possible. “Every race weekend is different, however. Anything can happen. You saw that in qualifying, after which I was given a five-place grid penalty due to the yellow flags. That can happen to anyone very quickly.”
