It’s no secret in the paddock that Sebastian Vettel and Mick Schumacher get on well. The four-time world champion always saw Michael Schumacher as his idol. Now that Mick is on the grid, Vettel is fulfilling a kind of mentoring role for the young German. He also advises that a future at Ferrari is a fantastic choice.
Vettel himself experienced highs and lows at Ferrari. After four world championships at Red Bull, he tried at the Italian stable, but failed to win a fifth world title. After 2020, Ferrari ended the collaboration with Vettel, but the German can still recommend the Scuderia.
“I haven’t had my greatest successes there, but I’ve still had some great years,” Vettel told F1 Insider. “The brand will always remain special.” His mentor still thinks a future for Schumacher at Ferrari is a good idea. “I won’t advise him not to do it just because it didn’t all work for me.”
Vettel sees similarities between Mick and Michael Schumacher
Schumacher is currently driving for the Haas Formula 1 team, where he cannot score highly. Still, Vettel is proud of ‘his’ student. “He is doing very well. His approach and dedication reminds me of his father’s. I really hope he gets a car that he can do more with next season.”
As an Aston Martin driver, Vettel is actually Schumacher’s competitor, but he doesn’t see it that way himself. “I’m more like a friend than someone with only responsibilities. You’re always there for friends. That’s why I don’t feel any competition with him and I’m very happy to pass on my experience.”
“I’m not the type to weigh everything in a paranoid way to play games and get my own advantage,” said Vettel. “It also makes no sense to withhold information from, for example, teammates. I just look at the whole, that we want to move forward as a team.”
