Lewis Hamilton has been able to call himself Valtteri Bottas’ teammate for five seasons and vice versa. He recently named the Finn as his best teammate ever and in conversation with Sky Sport Italy explains why.
At the end of this season, the partnership between Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas at Mercedes will come to an end. The Finn is moving to Alfa Romeo, because he has to make way for George Russell at Mercedes. Hamilton will undoubtedly regret that, because in Bottas he saw his best teammate ever.
If Hamilton talks to Sky Sport Italy When asked about his best competitors in Formula 1, he instead states that Bottas was his best team-mate and also why: “When I say that Bottas is my best team-mate, you have to understand what that means.”
“We are active in a sport in which we are trying to win two world titles. We are both trying to go for the drivers’ title, but together we also bear the responsibility for winning the constructors’ title. For that we have to work together,” said the seven-time world champion and 100-time GP winner.
“For the first time I had a teammate with whom I really communicated in the sense of ‘I felt this, I noticed that’. We do not hide anything from the other and we only want to help each other to be as good as possible. That is never happened to me with other drivers. That’s something unique.”
Also off the track, the person that Bottas is deserves a lot of praise, according to Hamilton: “As a person he is great, off the track he is a real gentlemen. Without frills.”
