The Red Bull Racing team sees ghosts, concludes Toto Wolff. The Mercedes team principal emphasizes that his team really doesn’t have anything crazy in the rear wing and that he is therefore not worried about the ongoing FIA investigation.
Red Bull has been working on the rear wing of Mercedes for a while now. The Austrian team is firmly convinced that it is too flexible and would therefore not comply with the FIA regulations. The team has therefore threatened several times with a protest. Still, the Mercedes team emphasizes that there is really nothing illegal about their rear wing. “Can you show me what you see in these photos?” Wolff asks. “I can’t see anything in these pictures other than things are scratched. I don’t know where they got this picture from or what it actually says. They see ghosts.”
Protest Red Bull upcoming?
When asked if Wolff expects Red Bull to protest, he replied: “I don’t know what they plan to do. I can’t follow their train of thought. It seems unpredictable, but that’s okay. I don’t want any more oil. throw the fire. We’re trying to look after ourselves and do our job as best we can. We’re still 14 points behind, we have to have a good race on Sunday, that’s what’s important.
The FIA has now announced that it will thoroughly examine all rear wings. Wolff isn’t worried about that at all, though. “That also has to do with next year, because they want to make things a bit more robust and check how much the wing deflects. It’s not in the regulations, there is no technical directive. It’s more of an experiment.”
Mercedes can’t keep up with rumors
According to Red Bull Racing, the difference in speed on the straights in Qatar is suddenly much less than in Brazil. However, according to Wolff, this has nothing to do with an adjustment of the rear wing. “Did they show that or pictures regarding the speed on the straights?” Wolff asks. “This circuit is less sensitive to top speed and I think they just did their job well. Their speed on the straights with that big rear wing is similar to ours. So I’m glad they’re happy. Maybe we’ll hear in Saudi Arabia is something again. I can’t keep up with it all. I’ve decided for myself and the team – we just can’t keep up with the rumors from that side.”
