Wolff: ‘Situation at Mercedes in 2016 more intense than title battle with Red Bull’

Toto Wolff thinks the tension between Mercedes and Red Bull Racing is no greater than the internal tension at Mercedes in 2016. Nico Rosberg took on Lewis Hamilton in the season finale that year, who had to hand over the world title. For Wolff, that championship was more difficult than the 2021 title fight.

“The situation was perhaps more intense then, in 2016,” he tells Formel1. “It was very difficult to control both sides of the garage, but at the same time maintain transparency,” he adds. There was unrest on both sides of the garage as within the team, two teams of engineers and mechanics competed against each other.

The Mercedes team boss does not go into detail: “I don’t want to go into the problems we knew then. If I could do it over again, I would certainly do certain things differently.’ He might have put a stop to the fact that Rosberg was not retiring much later – the title fight had asked too much of him.

Now that Wolff is up against an outside party, he notices that the dynamics are different: “It is a bitter battle between the teams and the drivers, who have simply done an excellent job. Sometimes two or three drivers just drive 45 seconds apart from the rest of the field. I don’t mean that arrogantly, but it shows how much work we put in to win.’
