The Gresini team was the first of the twelve MotoGP teams to present the motorcycles for the 2022 season. The 2022 season represents a new beginning for the Italian team. Last year, the team reached an agreement with Ducati and signed Enea Bastianini and Fabio di Giannantonio.

After the death of team founder Fausto Gresini, widow Nadia Padovani took over management of the team. The Italian is the only team boss in MotoGP. Padovani expects podium finishes from Bastianini. Teammate Di Giannantonio should be the best rookie.

The colors blue and red dominate the paintwork of the two Ducatis. Aldo Drudi, who created Valentino Rossi’s helmet designs in the past and thus gained great fame, is responsible for the design. The goal when developing the livery was to combine the colors of Gresini and Ducati and create a unique color combination.

Enea Bastianini wants to be on top, Fabio di Giannantonio with a new start number

Enea Bastianini returns to the Gresini squad after his debut MotoGP season with Esponsorama-Ducati. “It’s great to be reunited with the Gresini family. Unfortunately, Fausto is no longer with us,” comments Bastianini, who is aiming for a significant increase for his second full season in MotoGP: “I want to be in the top in every race 5 fight.”

Fabio di Giannantonio already rode for Gresini in Moto2 and had a preliminary MotoGP contract. In MotoGP, however, the Italian has to get used to a new start number. “I always drove with the number 21, but I can’t use it because Morbidelli drives it. I chose number 49. I looked and saw that this number had never existed in MotoGP,” explains the rookie .

Ducati Corse boss Luigi Dall’Igna promises full support

The newly formed Gresini team is the fourth Ducati team in MotoGP. Ducati Corse boss Luigi Dall’Igna promises full support for the traditional team: “Gresini is now part of the Ducati family. That’s very important for us. We’ll be helping the team over the course of the season, both from a technical point of view and staff. Gresini will have our full support.”

The Ducati Corse boss looks closely at what the two young Italians are doing at Gresini. “At the Jerez test, ‘Diggia’ left a positive impression. I saw that he could enjoy driving,” notes Luigi Dall’Igna.

“Enea drove the 2021 machine for the first time – a further development of his previous machine. He had a very good first impression, the lap times were good. The first steps for 2022 were very good,” sums up Dall’Igna.

What does the Ducati Corse boss expect from the Gresini riders? “Enea has to continue to develop in MotoGP. He showed a very good rookie season and already finished on the podium. He has to continue on this path and keep growing. He could become a serious opponent this season,” notes Luigi Dall’Igna. “‘Diggia’ must take Enea as a model.”

Tragic team story with two deaths

The Gresini team completed its first season in the premier class in 1997. After a foray into the 250cc World Championship, Fausto Gresini’s team returned to MotoGP in the 2001 season. The project was overshadowed by the fatal accidents of Daijiro Kato in the 2003 season and Marco Simoncelli in the 2011 season.

After many years with Honda, Fausto Gresini reached an agreement with Aprilia ahead of the start of the 2015 MotoGP season and was in charge of the Italian manufacturer’s involvement until the end of 2021.

After seven years together, Aprilia and Gresini went their separate ways at the end of last season. Aprilia will have its own factory team from 2022.
