Hervé Poncharal: Customer team can provide world champions

Tech3-KTM team owner Hervé Poncharal is convinced, with a view to the level of performance in today’s MotoGP class, that not only a works rider can win the world title.

As a Yamaha satellite team, the French Tech3 team competed in the “premier class” for the first time in 2001 with Olivier Jacque and Shinya Nakano, 2000 world champions and runner-up in the 250cc class. Hervé Poncharal’s squad achieved 31 podium places in the premier class by 2018, but no victory. Only after switching to KTM in 2019, Miguel Oliveira Tech3 brought the first emotional MotoGP triumph at the Styria GP 2020 in Spielberg. A second win followed at the season finale of the same year in Portimão.

The 2021 season was disappointing for Tech3 KTM Factory Racing with Iker Lecuona and Danilo Petrucci and the World Championship ranks 20 and 21. In 2022, Hervé Poncharal will now have two promising rookies at the start with Moto2 world champion Remy Gardner and Raul Fernandez, eight-time Moto2 GP winner in 2021.

Hervé Poncharal is convinced: “The level of the independent teams rose very sharply. We were here a few years ago to ‘fill the grid’ and the manufacturers saw us as a burden on their shoulders. They had to do it to have a real field, but it was more like, ‘Ok, you guys get the stuff that would otherwise end up in the junkyard and give us some money for it. But you do your job and we fight against it for the world championship. Now it’s different, we won races in 2020, as did Razlan [Razali] and now also Campinoti ”, the Frenchman referred to the six victories of the Yamaha customer team by Fabio Quartararo and Franco Morbidelli in 2020 and the Pramac debut victory thanks to Jorge Martin in the first Spielberg race in 2021.

«Dorna and IRTA pushed them [Herstellervereinigung] MSMA, that was very, very productive, »continued Poncharal, President of the IRTA team association, with satisfaction. “Now there are no longer any satellite drivers or factory pilots. Everyone is on the same level, the majority of the drivers are directly under contract with the manufacturer, even on my jacket it says Factory Racing … That shows that everything we have worked for over the past ten years is bearing fruit. We achieved what we wanted to achieve – and I would like to thank everyone for that. ”

“We now have a different scenario,” said Poncharal and even went one step further: “It’s not crazy to think that a customer team driver could win the world title.”
